SONGWRITING · INDONESIA
Four people wrote it. One of them registered it.
A session runs late. Someone brought the chords, someone rewrote the second verse, someone came up with the hook that made it work, and someone was in the room the whole time contributing lines that ended up in the chorus. Everyone agrees it was collaborative. Nobody writes down the percentages, because it feels absurd to negotiate over a song nobody has heard yet.
Two years later it is on a playlist with four million streams and the registration says one writer.
This is the most common dispute in music, in every country, and it is almost never fraud. It is four people who were sure they would sort it out later.
Four people, one song, four honest accounts
The producer
Built the track, ran the session, saved the file. Registered it because somebody had to.
The guitarist
Changed the pre-chorus. That change is the reason the song works and it took ninety seconds.
The singer
Rewrote the second verse on the spot, and sang the melody that everyone now hums.
The friend who stayed
Sang the hook as a joke at half past eleven. It became the chorus. Is not on the registration at all.
None of them is lying. That is what makes it unfixable three years later.
